This Alaskan Native Stays ON THE MOVE for his Art

HAULING HEAVY FROZEN LOG INTO SHOP TO THAW Dec.2010

FILLING BABICHE  Jan. 2011
From hunting the moose, salvaging, fleshing and cutting the hide for the thicker footing area to hand cutting the caribou hide for the thinner babiche filling, George does it all. He searches year-round for birch grown straight in surrounding lands along the Yukon River, cuts and hauls it back to town by boat or snowmobile. He cuts the tree outside despite the weather into usable ribs and cross pieces for the snowshoe, planes it smooth and bends on a form.
He fills the frame for hours with moose rawhide and either caribou babiche or durable nylon twine. The standard snowshoes are finished with a golden varathane finish because of the hours of use they will receive in the snow. The traditional babiche snowshoes are kept in their natural state. The only thing he can't do is use a computer.
